TIGER ON TOP AT WGC AGAIN

Tiger Woods continued to dominate at the World Golf Championships last weekend, overpowering the elite field that included the outspoken Rory Sabatinni, to once again take the top prize in Ohio.

The women's #1 player, Lorena Ochoa, also was triumphant last weekend, winning her 1st ever major championship, coasting in on the final round to win the Women's British Open

PROPER PRACTICE

Knowing how to approach each shot, and aligning our body with a square clubface, neutral grip, and balanced approach is developed with only thing: practice.   Being able to practice efficiently and effectively is the key to keeping your body healthy and free from injury, but most importantly, your swing mechanics in check and in tune.  Follow these tips for an injury-free and flawless golf swing:

1) Your body is the engine of your golf swing, and just like an engine in a car,
the engine must be finely tuned in order for everything to work properly.  One way to accomplish this while practicing is to begin your practice session by not immediately hitting golf balls, but by stretching your golf muscles.  Many times a bad golf swing is the result of tightness in your “golf muscles”.  Take at least five minutes prior to hitting balls, and work on stretching your back, arms, and legs, which helps to further increase your flexibility and maintain your “engine”.  A great warm-up for this tip is to take your driver or fairway wood and rest it on your shoulders.  Holding onto the club, slowly make a deliberate back swing, holding it at the peak stretch, and then finish by making a deliberate follow through.  Then repeat.

2) Now that you are ready to hit balls, start by practicing chip and pitch shots, slowly moving up to a mid-iron, and finally to shots off of the tee.  This not only helps work on your overall game, but also keep in mind that your swing is the same swing for every club, the only thing that changes is the length of the arc and width of the stance. If you can develop good tempo and hit solid chip shots, you can carry that over into each of the other clubs.

3) It is not advantageous to your golf game if you spend the whole time hitting your driver.  This is simply because you do not play on a course with just your driver.  Try spending an equal amount of time on both your irons and woods, and finish your session with either some on-course scenarios, or some chip or pitch shots.

Almost An Aussie
-by Champion Golf Pro Mike Colandro of Colandro Golf

Although there was gold in those hills, there wasn’t any for me as I missed the cut.  After a good start in New Mexico in May, I was only able to buy a one-way plane ticket back to Aussie and maybe see Georgia-Lee.  When I arrived back, there was a Pro-Am in Melbourne, and I shot 67 to win about $1,500 which came in handy for the start of the tour in Tasmania.  We played Tasmania Golf Club which is across the bay from Hobart out on a Peninsula.  I finished top ten for another good check and called Georgia a couple times for inspiration.  Then I flew to Sydney to play the New South Wales Open at the Lakes Golf Club.  I stayed with some great friends, the Phillips family in the Northern Suburbs.  I was like one of the boys (the Phillips had three sons), and it was always good fun along with a drop of port after dinner most nights.

I kept in touch with Georgia because next week we were in Melbourne for the PGA.   I had another top ten finish in Sydney and, as always, a great time with the Phillips family.  Margaret and Reg Phillips treated me like family, and it was good to be at a home versus a hotel room. They had a beautiful home in the northern suburbs of Sydney, we had some great barbecues (cookouts) with the cockatoos eating right out of your hands .

Melbourne is in the Garden State of Victoria on the southeastern part of Australia.  The city of Melbourne is at the top end of Port Phillip Bay and the Yarra River meanders through the city.

As you travel into town fro the Tallamarine Airport, you go very close to the Flemington Racecourse, home of the “Melbourne Cup”.  The Cup is always the biggest race of the year and in Victoria it is a holiday.  It is a two mile long race amongst some of the best horses in the world and a gala event for everyone.  When driving south from the airport, the first major road you cross is Victoria Street, site of the famous Victoria Marketplace.  For years it was the place to shop for deals, from food to clothing, etc.  You then get to the Flinders Station next to the Yarra River and the fabulous new Crown Entertainment Center.  In the city and its suburbs, there is a mix of Europeans, especially Greeks and Italians, so there are a multitude of bistros and restaurants to please any taste.
