Weekly Golf Update for April 15, 2006

The Masters, once again, was an exciting event.  Although Phil won by 3 shots, it was anyone’s event going into the fourth round.  Hats off to Phil and does this mean a Tiger vs. Phil rivalry?

The week before, in the Nabisco Championship, Karrie Webb produced some phenomenal shots to win, Good on you Aussie!  Michelle Wie was right there again and she is an amazing young lady that will dominate the LPGA once she gets out of High School.

CTGolfTips is proud to welcome a new sponsor, “ZMK Enterprises”.  They are an authorized distributor of SBA Golf out of Jacksonville, Florida.  ZMK provides permanent, beautiful, professional scoreboards to the golf industry and targeted direct mail promotional programs, in most cases at No Charge to the Golf Course!!  It sounds too good to be true, but it really is not.  We are working with golf courses in New England on a program of tasteful, understated target marketing to add to what you already do in the surrounding community.  This world-class program will work for your course to increase your membership, golf outings, and general traffic!!  ZMK Enterprises can do it at NO COST to You!

My new Titleist 904R Driver and fairway woods feel great and are easy to hit.  This week our golf apparel sponsor, “Flash by Bruce Fleisher” sent me some beautiful shirts for our Trivia Prizes and my personal use.  Inthezonetech.com sent me some all natural “Ultimate-9”, a cell life extension and repair dietary supplement.  After a few days taking Ultimate-9, I feel more energized with less aches and pains.  Happy Easter to everyone, especially my mates Peter and Brenda Breen of Noosa, Queensland, Australia and to all my fans downunder – “I’m still swinging, no worries.”

A Tour-Eye’s View

An Easter Classic

Back in 1985, I started the year in Australia playing most of the major events.  Played well enough to make some money but never really contended.  Instead of going to Asia or back to the States, I stayed in Australia and played in several Pro-Ams and other events.  We traveled into the country and we saw a lot of Rhoo’s and desert style courses.

In April, there were several events in and around Melbourne.  The Easter Classic at Yarra Yarra Golf Club was a 36 hole one-day marathon, in the Melbourne sand belt.  Yarra Yarra is a beautiful layout through some big Eucalyptus and pine trees. After 36 holes, I shot 4 under 140 and was tied with Aussie Pro, Rob Stephens.

We played off on the short 10th hole of 300 meters (330 yards) downhill.  It is well guarded on both sides with trees and normally you would lay-up off the tee with a long iron.  Being a playoff I said, “let’s go for it” and took a drive that ended up in the trees, then found the ball and hit my second in a bunker 30 yards from the green.  Rob, my opponent, was on the green with a 15 footer for birdie.  I figured I needed to hit a shot up pretty close and hoped he would miss the birdie putt.

I had this shot several times playing in the Melbourne sand belt, so I felt comfortable with it.  I took my sand wedge and just tried to clip the ball clean with an easy swing.  Taking a deep breathe just before I hit, I swung and hit this remarkable shot at the hole and after one bounce, it trickled into the hole for 3.  The enclosed picture was taken of me while I just hit my winning bunker shot, with a look of amazement, wondering if it could go in and it did.  My opponent, Rob, couldn’t believe it and was so startled, he missed his putt and I won The Easter Classic (1985).

Golf Tips

This weeks Golf Tip is from my mentor and sports coach, Bob Prysmierski.  Bob will share with you some unique tips that are a bit different, however, they do work.

Golfers all over the world wonder how to take their game from the practice tee to the course.  Here’s our solution for training the mind to “concentrate” so it’s not an accident when it happens.

On the practice range:

Look around and pick out something that might be moving like a flag waving, golf carts moving, people walking, or someone swinging a club.

This will help you relax your eyes and shift your awareness from internal and limited thoughts to your external environment.

Next, begin working with your ears: stop listening to the inner dialogue and begin listening to highway traffic, other people talking in the distance, or other golf balls being hit.

Now… step up to the ball and exhale.  At the end of your exhale and before the inhale begins, swing the club.  We describe the place between the exhale and inhale as “the gap”.  By repeatedly finding the “gap”, you’ll begin to find the zone effortlessly.

Then take that same practice to the course; i.e., once you’ve looked at the lie … measured the wind and distance to the landing area… stop thinking about the shot… start listening to sounds… step up to the shot… exhale and swing.

In conclusion, there are many other tips that we will go through each week.  I hope these tips will help and visit CTGolfTips.com next week for more Golf, and check our Archives for past Golf Tips.
