Golf Tips

This past week I played in the New England Senior Open in New Hampshire.  I went up with my good buddy Gene Barto who caddied for me this week.  Gene is an avid golfer who really enjoyed being part of the event.  Gene said, “Everyone has their own individual swing, but what they have in common is good tempo with not trying to over-swing.”  “Also, most pro’s have very good course management and not taking unnecessary risks.”

Gene was my caddie and saw firsthand just how I and other pro’s do it.  He met fellow Pro, Tom Sullivan of Western Massachusetts, and became very friendly during and after the round, offering Gene some valued tips.  Tom is a seasoned club pro who has won several events around New England.  Tom told Gene to “swing under the shaft without the grip getting too far ahead, which will allow you to release without fear.”  Gene can do it and at 63 years old, still can hit the ball 300 yards.

We also saw my old friend Jim King, at 72 years old can still play.  He shot 70 the first round and beat his age once again.  Jim’s claim to fame was when he threatened a PGA Tour Official, some years ago.  Jim is really a gentle man, but still fighting fit and can hit the ball a long way for his age.  Gene, my caddie, was very impressed at how the pros where eager to help at the practice tee and how they got along so well.  If you ever get a chance to caddie, take it.  As a matter of fact, I am looking for a caddie.  Call me on 860-575-7481.

Weekly Golf Update for June 10, 2006

This past week a good friend of everyone in the golf world passed away, Jack Burrill.  Jack had written his last article for CTGolfTips.com in our May 27th edition and was going to continue writing for us.  My Tour-Eye’s View Article is dedicated to Jack and his life.

I played the New England Senior Open in New Hampshire and the first day was a sunny, warm day.  After a 72 over par, I was 5 behind the leaders with hopes to come back strong.  The second and final round was windy, cold, raining, and I just had a hard time in the cold, shot 82.  Will put that behind me now and get ready to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open in Fairfax, Virginia.

Clothes Make the Man Golf Outing at Gillette Ridge Golf Club was a big success on June 8th, even though the weather was a bit cool.  I gave some tips both on the practice tee and on the course, along with singing one of my unique golf songs at the dinner.

Gillette Ridge Golf Club was in great shape and Golf Professional, Tony Roberto, was happy to accommodate all needs to make the Clothes Make the Man Golf Outing run smoothly.

Damon Scott, local celebrity D.J. (WTIC), was kind enough to promote the Golf Outing on air and he showed up at the dinner to M.C. the evenings events.  The craziest golfing outfit went to Carl for the second year in a row.

Big Al won the Closest to Pin Contest sponsored by “The Jet Blue Challenge”, and the trophy was presented by Executive Director, David Eppner.

The door prize was won by Donna, an Executive Committee Member, who was there all day to help out.  It was a great day with only a little rain.  Hats off to Dave and his Committee at Clothes Make the Man for a job well done.

A Tour-Eye’s View

Jack Burrill – Golf Journalist, TV Host, Champion Golfer

I got a phone call on Monday that my good friend, Jack Burrill, passed away after a fight with his heart for four days.  Jack was proudest of his two sons and daughters, although I did not know them, my heart is with them.

Jack, U.S. Army Veteran, goes back a long way with me in that Jack and my dad, Al “Babe” Colandro, were good friends and won the Wethersfield Four Ball Event once.  Jack was an accomplished player, winning the Wampanoag Country Club Championship four times.  In his youth, he played at Rockledge Country Club and worked for Tommy Armour, the great Scottish Pro.  Tommy Armour was a well respected player and teacher, and Jack learned a lot from him.  One big thing that Tommy advised Jack was to stay amateur and not to turn pro.  He said, “You are to smart.”

So, Jack listened and graduated from Trinity College and got into advertising and public relations.  He started the first T.V. show “The Golf Scene” in Connecticut and published the monthly magazine with the same name.  Jack’s T.V. show had some interesting guests, and although short lived, many people remembered the show.  One guest was Lee Trevino, who never had a lack of words, and Jack’s interview was pretty much an opening for Connecticut residents to listen to what Lee had to say about winning majors, etc.

We at CTGolfTips.com are going to continue Jack’s legacy by posting a story that Jack wrote each month with some photos and video clips.  Jack died at 77 and we will never forget his desire and drive to report on many different aspects of golf in Connecticut.  He will be sadly missed by me and all others who loved him; however, his time on this earth will live on through his children, grandchildren and CTGolfTips.com

See you on the course! - Mike Colandro
