Through the wet conditions, I have been working on my game getting ready to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open (June 15th). Starting to utilize Hawks Landing Country Club in Southington and the course is in great shape. They are open to the public and offer: weekday a.m. specials, twilight rates after 6:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday after 4:00 p.m. You may want to get some help from the Pro, John Vitale, at their new driving range. Click on their Banner for more information. Also, I am looking for caddies, (any age), either carrying the bag or driving the cart so I can start walking. Anyone who has the time to do it, call me on 860-575-7481. Starting to workout both Powerhouse Gym in Berlin and Malibu Fitness in Farmington. Personal trainer, Alicia, will be helping me get back into my optimal shape, to get back to winning golf championships again. We are proud to have Malibu Fitness of Farmington as one of our supporting sponsors. A Tour-Eyes View Winning the Payless Victorian Open (Canada) The year was 1992 and I had played well in Australia but no wins. I flew back to the States in May and competed in the U.S. Open Qualifying in LA. I didnt qualify and was a little disappointed, but I put it behind me and started the Canadian Tour two weeks later up in British Columbia in Victoria. We played at Royal Colwood Golf Club, a beautiful course with trees so old they have plaques on them stating their age. The 400-500 year old trees are so big they hang over the fairway to make each hole even tighter. I used a 3 wood off most tees throughout the week and after rounds of 68-71-69, I was 8 shots back going into Sunday. On Sunday, I knew I had to go low and after a bogey-free round with 5 birdies, I posted a 65 and 7 under for the event. Now I waited about an hour and a half before I found myself in a 3-way playoff. Going into the playoff, my mind set was very good because I had been in many playoffs and came through with wins. Finally, on the 4th playoff hole, I beat Pat Bates with a par and made a great start for my first victory in 1992. Winning anytime is a great feeling but doing it in a playoff is extra special. If you want to have a unique golf vacation, try Victoria British Columbia. There are many great golf courses and it has a taste of Great Britain. Whether it be a short 40 yard pitch shot or a full blooded drive on a par 5, one needs to have a key to start their swing. One key is to maintain a similar pre-shot routine that will allow you to program your mind to just swing the club, not think. Your pre-shot routine should include at least one practice swing, either behind the ball or next to it. This practice swing will help you get rid of any nervous energy along with giving you time to think. Now when you get to the ball, there are many keys to help start your swing. Such as: tilt of head back, left knee kick in, forward press with hands, golf club waggle, cock of wrists over ball, etc. A key can also help with your putting so you can be more fluid and help you make a free flowing stroke. A forward press is utilized by many pros including me, but you need to be careful that you do not close the club face. Another key used by Davis Love and Aaron Baddeley is to look at your line then immediately stroke the putt which eliminates any time to think, so you can just stroke the putt. One needs to find what works for them, then practice it so that it becomes a natural, normal part of your game. This will work as long as you keep doing it and trusting it. There are many other tips that we will go through each week. I hope these tips will help and visit CTGolfTips.com next week for more Golf, and check our Archives for past Golf Tips.
