GREAT
ENDING
AT THE
BYRON
NELSON
Scott
Verplank,
has been
as much
a
fixture
at the
Byron
Nelson
Classic
as the
man
himself,
and
finally,
a year
after
Byron
Nelson
passed
away,
Verplank
hung on
down the
stretch
to win
the
tournament
on
Sunday.
Silvia
Cavalleri
was the
first
Italian
winner
on the
LPGA
Tour
with her
victory
on
Sunday.
The
tournament
also
marked
Lorena
Ochoa's
first
tournament
as the
world's
#1
player -
taking
over the
spot
that had
been
occupied
for 4
years by
Annika
Sorenstam.

This Week's Golf
Tip -by

Owner of the Premier Golf Academy
Set Up
A perfect swing
begins with a perfect set-up. By aligning our body and our club
square and on-line to the target, if we hit it correctly, the ball
will go exactly where we hope it will go. Our alignment however, is
just one piece of the puzzle. With a correct neutral grip, we can now
set-up to the ball.
Whether you are
hitting a driver off the tee box, or chipping around the green, having
a correct set-up is essential. A perfect set-up always includes two
important parts: posture and balance. Perfect posture means that no
matter what the shot, you are comfortable over the ball, and are in an
athletic position. Since golf is a sport and golfers are athletes, it
goes without saying that all athletes must look the part. To do
this, first, relax. Tension is the #1 killer in all golf swings.
When addressing your ball, your spine should be angled in such a way
that has your shoulders on top of your toes and our arms hanging
freely down from the shoulders. A good way to test this is by
getting into position, and taking your right arm off of the club and
let it hang freely. If you let your right arm swing loosely, it will
come right back to your club. With this, bend your knees just enough
to earn our second point of discussion, balance.
Without
balance, it is guaranteed our perfect swing will fail. Our weight
should be centered over the sole of your feet, and your feet should be
spread accordingly:
-
For chips, pitches, and your
low irons (8,9) your feet should be closer than shoulder width apart.
-
For your mid-irons (5-6-7)
your feet should be shoulder width apart.
-
For your long-irons and woods,
your feet should be wider than shoulder width apart, because with the
increased shaft length means increased stability.
Balance also comes
with swinging within your limits. A controlled tempo golf swing will
incorporate balance, so know your limits. Good exercise programs and
proper practice techniques will help you develop a sound swing! |
Almost An Aussie
-by Champion Golf Pro Mike Colandro,

Excerpt from Book - Almost an Aussie
It was
March of 85 and back in Aussie a beautiful time of year
Autumn. Peaceful, warm days and cool, dry nights, especially in
Victoria, the Garden State. The main PGA tour was over and there
were many Pro-Am, etc. being contested throughout the
countryside. We started playing around Melbourne, then moved out
to the country to play on the Murray River. The Great Murray
River is Australias longest river and is the borderline between
New South Wales and Victoria. There are many crops that utilize
the waters at the Murray River from fruit veggies grapes
etc. Many golf courses are situated along side the Murray and
with its arid climate, they all are in great shape. There was a 2
day event in the Albury-Wodonga area on the weekend and Rothmans
was a major sponsor.
Back in
those days many cigarette companies still sponsored golf events
and Rothmans also employed some attractive women to hand out free
cigarettes. One of those attractive women was Georgia Lee Eames
of Melbourne. A beautiful woman with long curly amber hair, very
slender and with a gleam in her eye like no other. She enjoyed
the work, especially out on the golf course in the fresh air. The
first day, I noticed her and went over to talk to her, and she
gave me some cigarettes, although I did not smoke. After the
round, I was drawn to her again and asked if she and her other
friends would join me for dinner. After a lot of graveling, she
said yes, but her boss had to join us with another girl. At
dinner, Georgia seemed very happy but a bit nervous, especially
when I asked to give her a ride back to her room. She did say yes
and we talked for almost 2 hours. She was living with a guy and
ready to break it up, so I couldnt get her telephone number. She
told me that her uncle and auntie were members at Yarra Yarra Golf
Club, site of the upcoming Easter Classic, and if you see them
then, they can contact me.
I ended up winning the Easter Classic (36 holes) in a
playoff, holing out a 30 yard bunker shot to win. (Picture). We
played37 holes in one day , and to win in playoff was quite
dramatic .Also to win at Yarra Yarra , one of the sand belts great
layouts , was a highlight of my career. The word got back to
Georgia and soon we were dating, but for only a short 2 months,
because I was leaving Aussie to go back to the States. In May,
when I left, we left it open and if we were available when I
returned will we were.
