Ken House: New to golf? Learn to play from
the pros

A friend asked this week, “How do you recommend that a
40-something-year-old man get started in golf?”
The operators of
www.CTGolfTips.com
have an answer. The site, which provides a variety of
statewide golf news, is offering a special program titled
“Golf 101 For New Golfers — Learn From The Pros.”
The lesson series, which bills itself as a “complete
hands-on course ideal for new golfers and anyone who
wants to improve their game,” takes place at Miner Hills
Golf Course in Middletown. George Claffey, a coach with
The First Tee of Connecticut, an employee at the TPC at
River Highlands, and the head teaching pro at Miner
Hills, is the principal instructor.
“This is a popular series,” said East Hartford native
Robert Tamiso, Marketing Director at Empire Group, LTD.
“It’s perfect for beginners or guys who are rehabbing an
injury. The classes are kept small and you get six hours
of lessons for $100.”The Saturday series runs
four consecutive weeks from 4-5:30 p.m. starting on July
20. The Sunday series runs four consecutive weeks from
3-4:30 starting July 26. The Tuesday series runs four
consecutive weeks from 6:30- 8 p.m. starting July 29
On the website, there’s also information on Golf 102.
That’s a program for the intermediate golfer who wants
to improve via playing lessons with a pro and video
swing analysis.
The Golf 101 series begins on the range and teaches the
basics. It progresses to putting and chipping and goes
on-course for a scramble event where more advanced
concepts are taught.
Perhaps the best feature of the program — especially for
those unsure whether they’re going to really like golf —
is that all the equipment is included.
Then, if the golf bug bites those who participate in the
program, the website has a series of video lessons to
further the player’s learning.
But, at the very least, there’s enough material to
satisfy any first-time golfer, no matter what age.
